Q-0001

The question

What, exactly, is the Laprairie County répertoire we drew from? The CD scan has no printed title page. Its foreword calls it the Répertoire du comté de Laprairie, credits “M. l’abbé Jetté” for the St-Philippe (to 1916), St-Isidore and St-Jacques-le-Mineur transcriptions and “M. Bernard Bisson” for St-Constant, and the coverage table runs 1751–1972. Publisher and year are absent.

What would close it

The printed title page or colophon of the volume — from the NAS copy of the cover, a library catalogue entry (BAnQ), or the publisher’s list. Until then every citation of S-0001 carries the description above rather than an author–title–year.

Q-0003

The question

Who was Catherine Bordeau’s mother? The LAFRANCE entry for her 1751 Laprairie marriage to Louis-Laurent Roy (S-0009, acte 318638) gives Marguerite Gervais; PRDH, for the same act, gives Marguerite Guérin dit Lafontaine. Steve flagged it on chart 18: « Mystery here ». Two indexes, one act, two mothers — one of them is a transcription or a standardisation decision, and an index cannot say which.

What would close it

The act itself (one click from S-0009), read for the mother’s name as the priest wrote it; then, if the act is ambiguous, Joseph Bourdeau’s own marriage and Catherine’s baptism.

Q-0002

The question

How many Pascal Comtes were there at St-Constant, and which one is Louis’s father? The répertoire (S-0001, p. 115) gives the parents of four Comte children marrying at St-Constant as « Pascal & Véronique Laplante/Lériger » (Pauline 1824, Louis 1830) and « Pascal & Marguerite Sorel » (M.-Olive 1827, Véronique 1828). The 1830 act (S-0002) itself contains two Pascal Comtes — the father, and « son frère » (P-0007) as witness.

Three readings, none excluded: (a) one Pascal (P-0003) married twice — Sorel before or after Lériger; (b) a second adult Pascal Comte at St-Constant in the 1820s who is neither P-0003 nor P-0007; © a compiler’s error. Reading (a) is awkward: Pascal married Véronique Lérigé in 1787 (S-0003), so Sorel’s children marrying in 1827–28 (born c. 1800–07) would have to be from a second marriage after Véronique’s death — yet Louis, Véronique’s son, is fils majeur in 1830, born before 1809, and Pauline married in 1824.

Note, 29 Sept 2026 (Claude): the timing argument above is weaker than it reads. Fils majeur puts Louis’s birth before February 1809, not near it. If Véronique’s children were born c. 1788–1800, and she died c. 1800, and Pascal remarried a Sorel c. 1801, then daughters born c. 1802–07 marrying in 1827–28 fit reading (a) without strain. Nothing yet held dates Louis’s or Pauline’s birth. Reading (a) is therefore not disfavoured by anything in the records; all three stay open.

What we know from the répertoire (29 Sept 2026)

Re-read in full: S-0001, “Read again for Q-0002”. The four St-Constant marriages:

Date Bride Husband (his parents) Mother as indexed
25 Oct 1824 Pauline Comte François Mailloux (Toussaint & Charlotte Betourné) Véronique Laplante
24 Sept 1827 M.-Olive Comte Georges Leclerc (Eustache & Marie Cardinal) Marguerite Sorel
19 May 1828 Véronique Comte Louis Gourd (Pierre & Marguerite Binet) Marguerite Sorel
1 Feb 1830 Louis Comte Rose David — act held, S-0002 Véronique Lériger

No Comte × Sorel marriage appears anywhere in the four Laprairie parishes, 1751–1972. If reading (a) is right, Pascal’s second marriage took place elsewhere: Pointe-Claire (his parish in 1787), Châteauguay, Montréal, or Laprairie (La Nativité), which this volume does not cover. The 1824 husband, François Mailloux, is very probably the 1830 witness « François Maill[e]rot(?), son beau-frère ». If so, the Véronique-mother family and the 1830 act corroborate each other.

What would close it

The two 1827 and 1828 acts at St-Constant (sighted), which will name the parents in full and may give ages; a burial of Véronique Lérigé; a second marriage of Pascal Comte; or the baptisms of the 1824–1830 children. Count the Pascals in the sighted acts before deciding.

Acts to pull, in order (29 Sept 2026):

  1. Index search first (LAFRANCE, Généalogie Québec): any marriage of a Pascal (or Pierre-Pascal) Comte/Compte/Lecomte to a Marguerite Sorel/Saurel, c. 1795–1815, any parish; and any burial of a Véronique Lérigé/Lériger/Laplante wife of Comte. One search may decide between (a) and (b) before any image is pulled. If the marriage exists, the act will say veuf de Véronique Lérigé, or it will not.
  2. St-Constant, 24 Sept 1827 — Leclerc × M.-Olive Comte. Does the father get feu? Is the mother feue? Who witnesses — a « frère Louis », a « frère Pascal »?
  3. St-Constant, 19 May 1828 — Gourd × Véronique Comte. Same questions. A witness who also appears in 1824 or 1830 joins the families.
  4. St-Constant, 25 Oct 1824 — Mailloux × Pauline Comte. Settles « Maill[e]rot », and gives the Véronique family’s witnesses for comparison.

If the 1827–28 acts call the bride’s father Pascal Comte with no qualifier and the two families share no witness, the acts will not decide the question alone; the index search and the baptisms will.

What S-0049 says (29 Sept 2026)

Steve found the marriage the répertoire lacked (it is filed under neither COMTE nor SOREL on the pages read). At St-Constant, 13 Nov 1809, Paschal Lecompte, mineur, journalier, son of Paschal Lecompte and Véronique Laplante, married Marguerite Saurel, daughter of feu Michel Saurel and Marie-Anne Provost. His maternal uncle Jean-Baptiste Laplante was a witness. Neither of the groom’s parents is feu.

This is reading (b), with a detail none of the three readings named: the second adult Pascal Comte at St-Constant is the son, P-0007, the « son frère » of the 1830 act. Reading (a) falls, because in 1809 the Sorel wife belongs to the son while the father’s wife, Véronique, is alive and named. Reading © falls, because the compiler did not err: the two couples are real and distinct. The 1827 and 1828 brides are then Louis’s nieces, born of the 1809 marriage.

The timing objection in P-0007’s file (« a brother of a man marrying in 1830 is unlikely to have daughters marrying in 1827 ») was wrong. It assumed the brothers were close in age. Pascal fils married at about 20, and Louis at up to 42 (born c. 1788–1808).

What remains before a ruling: the 1827 and 1828 acts would confirm that the brides are daughters of this couple. The répertoire says « Pascal & Marguerite Sorel », and only one such couple is known. Their acts are no longer needed to decide Louis’s father. They are needed only if M.-Olive and Véronique are ever given files.

Proposed ruling (Claude, for Steve): resolved in favour of (b). P-0003 (married 1787 to Véronique Lérigé) is Louis’s father. The « Pascal & Marguerite Sorel » of the répertoire is his son P-0007, married 1809 (S-0049). The F-0002 filiation of Louis is unaffected, and stays Probable-Strong for the reason it already had: no baptism yet links the 1830 parent to the 1787 groom.

Resolution

Resolved 29 Sept 2026 by Steve, accepting reading (b). There were two Pascal Comtes at St-Constant: the father, P-0003 (× Véronique Lérigé, St-Philippe 1787; S-0003), who is Louis’s father, and the son, P-0007 (× Marguerite Saurel, St-Constant 1809; S-0049), who is the « Pascal & Marguerite Sorel » of the répertoire and the « son frère » of the 1830 act. Louis’s filiation in F-0002 stays Probable-Strong: this ruling removes a rival father, but it does not link the 1830 parent to the 1787 groom by document.

Q-0004 · resolved · ruled by Steve, 2026-09-29

Q-0004

The question

Is the St-Constant Pascal Comte, blacksmith, who signs his name at Louis’s baptism in 1807 (S-0052), the St-Philippe groom of 1787, Pierre Pascal Compte of Pointe-Claire, who could not sign (S-0003)?

Everything above Louis on the Comte line (the whole Lecomte and Boullerice ascent) passes through this joint. So far it rests on the couple’s names alone. Pascal and Véronique Lérigé/Lériger de Laplante marry at St-Philippe in 1787. A Pascal Comte and Véronique Laplante are parents at St-Constant in 1807, 1809 and 1830. The county répertoire holds only one Comte × Lériger marriage (S-0001, p. 115).

For one man

  • The wife’s name, Véronique Lériger dit Laplante, is uncommon, and the répertoire has one such marriage in the county, 1751–1972.
  • The Pierre Comte × Geneviève Boullerice family, the 1787 groom’s parents, had a daughter marrying at St-Constant by 1793 (S-0001, LECOMPTE p. 288), so the family moved into the parish where the later acts are.
  • Laplante kin surround the St-Constant couple: Louis Lériger godfather 1807 (S-0052), Jean-Baptiste Laplante oncle maternel 1809 (S-0049). The 1787 bride’s brother was a Charles Lérigé (S-0003).
  • A man unable to sign at his wedding can learn to write his name in twenty years. The 1807 signature is unpractised: all lower case, the letters separately formed.

Against, or not yet for

  • The signature. « ne sçait signer » in 1787, « a signé avec nous » in 1807.
  • No document names the St-Constant father Pierre Pascal, or gives his parents.
  • The 1787 groom has no occupation recorded. The 1807 father is a forgeron (blacksmith), a trade that sometimes goes with signing.

What would close it

  • Pascal’s burial, St-Constant, after 1830. It will give an age to set against a baptism of Pierre Pascal, son of Pierre Comte and Geneviève Boullerice, c. 1760s, at Lachine or Pointe-Claire. It may also name his widow or wife.
  • The earliest children, c. 1788–1800. A baptism at St-Philippe or St-Constant naming the father Pierre Pascal, or with a Comte grandparent or uncle as godparent (Pierre Compte, Joseph or Urbain Compte), would tie the 1787 couple to the St-Constant household.
  • A second signature by the St-Constant Pascal, 1790s–1820s, to show whether 1807 is a habit or an exception. Or a second ne sait signer from him, which would make the 1807 signature the anomaly.
  • Véronique’s burial, which may name her husband with a forename or trade.

What the burial says (S-0053, 29 Sept 2026)

Pulled the same afternoon the question was opened. Paschal Lecomte, buried at St-Rémi, 15 March 1831, died the 13th, aged seventy-three, époux de Véronique Laplante. A Louis Lecomte was a witness.

  • The age fits. Born c. 1757–58, he was about 29 at the April 1787 wedding. The 1787 groom’s parents married at Lachine in April 1751 (S-0004, F-0003), so a son born six or seven years later is ordinary. Burial ages can be several years out, but not by enough to matter here.
  • It rules out one alternative. A St-Constant Pascal a generation younger than the 1787 groom, a son or a nephew, cannot be the husband of Véronique who dies at 73 in 1831.
  • It does not join them. The act names the wife and nothing else: no Pierre, no parents. The joint still rests on the same names, now with an age that fits.
  • The signature is untouched. Nobody signs at a burial.

What would now close it: a baptism, c. 1756–59, of Pierre Pascal, son of Pierre Lecomte and Geneviève Boullerice, at Lachine, Pointe-Claire or Montréal. It would give the 1787 groom a birth date to set beside this age. It would still be a name-and-age argument, but a three-point one: the 1787 groom’s parents, the 1831 age, and the one Comte × Lériger marriage in the county. Or, better, an early child of the St-Constant couple whose godparent is a Pierre, Joseph or Urbain Compte. That would be kin of the 1787 groom inside the St-Constant household.

Claude’s reading, for Steve: the balance has moved toward one man. The age now fits, and the Laplante kin around the St-Constant couple are consistent with the 1787 bride’s family, though none of them has yet been shown to be a child of Charles Lérigé. Against that there remains only the signature, and a man can learn to write his name in twenty years. Not yet a ruling: nothing in hand names the St-Constant father as the 1787 groom.

What the baptism says (S-0054, 29 Sept 2026)

Pulled the same afternoon. Caughnawaga (Sault-St-Louis), 26 March 1758, in Latin: Petrus Paschalis, born the day before, son of Pierre Lecomte and Geneviève Boulris, married. That was Easter Day, which is why he is Paschal, and it fixes the year independently of the overwritten digit on the page.

Three documents, three joins:

1758 baptism (S-0054) 1787 marriage (S-0003) 1831 burial (S-0053)
Forenames Pierre Pascal Pierre Pascal Paschal
Parents Pierre Lecomte & Geneviève Boulris Pierre Compte & Geneviève Boullerice —
Wife — Véronique Lérigé Véronique Laplante
Born 25 Mar 1758 — c. Mar 1758 (« 73 » on 13 Mar 1831)

The 1787 groom is joined to the baptism by both parents, and to the burial by his wife. The burial is joined to the baptism by an age exact to the month: 72 years 11 months, given as seventy-three. The St-Constant father of 1807–1830 is the burial’s man by the same wife (S-0052, S-0049, S-0002).

The signature still stands against. Nothing here explains it, and nothing needs to. A man who could not sign at twenty-nine and wrote « pascal comte » in an unpractised hand at forty-nine is not remarkable. His parents both signed in 1751 (F-0003).

Proposed ruling (Claude, for Steve): one man. The St-Constant Pascal Comte, father of Louis, is P-0003: Pierre Pascal, baptized at Caughnawaga 1758, married at St-Philippe 1787, buried at St-Rémi 1831. The joint F-0002 → P-0001 would then rest on three documents that each share two independent facts with another, not on a name. If Steve so rules, that is the argument for raising Louis’s filiation in F-0002 from Probable-Strong to Proven. The grade is not changed until he does.

Resolution

Resolved 29 Sept 2026 by Steve: one man. The St-Constant Pascal Comte, forgeron, father of Louis (S-0052, S-0049, S-0002), is P-0003: Pierre Pascal, baptized at Caughnawaga on 26 March 1758 (S-0054), married at St-Philippe on 16 April 1787 (S-0003), buried at St-Rémi on 15 March 1831 aged 73 (S-0053). The 1807 signature is his, learned after 1787. On this ruling Louis’s filiation in F-0002 is raised from Probable-Strong to Proven.

Q-0005 · resolved · ruled by Steve, 2026-09-29

Q-0005

The question

Are Pierre-Pascal’s parents, Pierre Lecomte & Geneviève Boulris at his baptism (Caughnawaga 1758, S-0054) and Pierre Compte & Geneviève Boullerice at his marriage (St-Philippe 1787, S-0003), the couple married at Lachine on 19 April 1751: Pierre Lecomte, son of the Montréal beadle, and Geneviève Boutrice, daughter of Gabriel (S-0004)?

This is F-0003’s filiation of P-0003, at Probable-Strong. Every position above 4 on the Comte line (the Lecomte, Fournier, Boutrice ascent) passes through it.

What holds it now

  • Both names of the couple, in three spellings of the wife’s surname (Boutrice, Boulris, Boullerice), across three acts.
  • Time and place. The son was born seven years after the marriage, at the Sault-St-Louis mission across Lac St-Louis from Lachine, where the bride lived. The family was at Pointe-Claire, beside Lachine, by 1787.

What does not

No document yet names the 1758 or 1787 parents with a qualifier from 1751: the groom’s father the beadle, the bride’s father Gabriel, or a Boutrice as kin. The 1758 godfather’s surname might be one (« Jean-Baptiste …[?]trice »; the bride’s brother was Jean-Baptiste Boutrice), but it is not read (S-0054).

What would close it

  1. The greffe copy of the 1787 St-Philippe marriage. S-0003 is the presbytère copy and carries no signatures, but it says « les uns ont signé », and Pierre Compte père was present. The 1751 groom signed « pierre cont » (S-0004). If the father’s signature is on the greffe copy, the hand is the join, and it is a document-level join, not a name. The 1807 greffe copy at St-Constant carried a father’s signature (S-0052), so this is worth trying first. 29 Sept 2026 (Steve): Généalogie Québec has only the presbytère copy of St-Philippe for 1787. The greffe copy may be on FamilySearch or at BAnQ, which is unconfirmed. Until then, (2) comes first.
  2. An index search (LAFRANCE): every marriage of a Geneviève Boutrice / Boullerice / Boulris, any date. If 1751 is the only one, no other Pierre-and-Geneviève couple exists to be confused with this one.
  3. The siblings’ baptisms, 1752–1770. Joseph and Urbain Compte, brothers of the groom in 1787, and any others, at Lachine, Caughnawaga or Pointe-Claire. Look for a Boutrice godparent (Gabriel, or Jean-Baptiste) or the father signing « pierre cont ».
  4. A burial of Pierre Lecomte père or of Geneviève naming the spouse, with an age.

The index search (S-0055, 29 Sept 2026)

Steve searched LAFRANCE for every marriage of a bride Geneviève Boutrice / Boullerice / Boulris / Boullerie. There is one: Lachine, 1751, to Pierre Lecomte. No second couple of these names married in the colony, as far as the index knows, so the 1758 and 1787 parents have no other marriage to belong to.

Claude’s reading, for Steve. This is the same kind of argument Steve accepted for Q-0004, though not the same strength.

  • For: both names of the couple, and the index holds only one marriage of a Geneviève under any of the four spellings; a son seven years after the wedding, at the mission across the lake from the bride’s parish; the family beside Lachine by 1787.
  • Weaker than Q-0004: there is no measurement like the age there, which agreed to the month. Here the uniqueness comes from a compiled index and is only as good as its coverage and the spellings searched. No act names a Boutrice kinsman or the beadle.
  • What would still add most: a sibling’s baptism (Joseph or Urbain, 1752–1770) with a Boutrice godparent, or the father’s hand beside « pierre cont ».

It could be ruled now as one couple, or left open for a sibling’s baptism. That is Steve’s call.

The PRDH family (S-0056, 29 Sept 2026)

PRDH family #28790 puts the 1751 Lachine couple at the head of a sibship of seventeen, with Pierre Pascal’s baptism (1758), marriage (1787) and burial (1831) among them, on the dates we read from the acts. It is compiled and cannot raise a grade by itself. But the linking was done independently, on the whole family, and it agrees with ours.

It also says where to look. The fourth child, baptized at Caughnawaga on 11 Sept 1761, is named Gabriel, the bride’s father’s name. In this mission register the godparents name the child (S-0054: « quem … nominaverunt »), so a Gabriel suggests a godfather named Gabriel, and the bride’s father, Gabriel Boutrice, is the obvious candidate. The name suggests it and the act would settle it. That baptism is now the single act most likely to close this question. It would put the 1751 bride’s father at the font for a child of the Caughnawaga couple, which is a join by kin, not by name. The 1759 Lachine baptism (Marie-Geneviève), in the bride’s own parish, is the second choice.

Gabriel’s baptism (S-0057, 29 Sept 2026)

Pulled the same afternoon. Caughnawaga, 12 Sept 1761: Gabriel, son of Petrus Cont and Genovefa Boutrise, named by Gabriel Boutrise with Thérèse Savoyard. The father signs « pierre cont ».

That is the two joins this question asked for, and neither is a name match of the couple:

  • Kin. The Caughnawaga couple’s son is named by a man with the 1751 bride’s father’s forename and surname, and the boy takes his name. The act does not say grandfather, so this is a strong inference, not a statement.
  • Hand. The Caughnawaga father signs pierre cont, the same unusual spelling and run-on as the 1751 Lachine groom’s own signature. The hands are consistent. The 1751 frame is too coarse to call them identical.

With what was already held (both names of the couple; one Geneviève Boutrice marriage in the index, S-0055; PRDH’s independent linking, S-0056), the 1751 couple and Pierre Pascal’s parents are now joined by kin and by hand as well as by name.

Proposed ruling (Claude, for Steve), superseded below: one couple. Pierre Lecomte and Geneviève Boutrice, married at Lachine on 19 April 1751 (S-0004), are the parents of Pierre Pascal (S-0054, S-0003). On that ruling F-0003’s filiation of P-0003 rises from Probable-Strong to Proven, and P-0008’s 1761 claims from Probable-Strong to Proven. No grade is changed until Steve rules.

Three more acts (S-0058, S-0059, S-0060, 29 Sept 2026)

  • Caughnawaga, 10 Feb 1757 (S-0058), the couple’s eldest child, Marie-Geneviève, of Petro Lecompte & Genovefa Boutrise, named by Gabriel Boutrise and Maria Carola Fournier. These are the names of the 1751 bride’s father and of the 1751 groom’s mother (S-0004; Marie Charlotte Fournier in 1721, S-0005). An eldest child named by one grandparent from each side is the custom. This joins the Caughnawaga couple to both families of the Lachine act.
  • Lachine, 10 Nov 1759 (S-0059): Marie-Geneviève again (the first presumably dead), of pierre lecomte & geneviève […], godfather pierre lecomte. The frame is too coarse for the mother’s surname. It puts the couple in the 1751 bride’s own parish between the Caughnawaga baptisms.
  • Notre-Dame de Montréal, 8 Dec 1799 (S-0060): Geneviève Boulerith, veuve de Pierre Comte forgeron, aged 72. The age is four years too many for a daughter of the 1731 marriage, which is common at elderly burials and is recorded. The trade is new: the father was a forgeron, as Pascal was at St-Constant in 1807.

Where it stands. The Caughnawaga couple, Pierre Pascal’s parents, is now joined to the 1751 Lachine couple by:

Join Act
The bride’s father and the groom’s mother name the eldest child S-0058 (1757)
The bride’s father names a son, who takes his name S-0057 (1761)
The father signs pierre cont, as the 1751 groom did S-0057 vs S-0004
A child baptized in the bride’s own parish S-0059 (1759)
One Geneviève Boutrice marriage in the index S-0055
PRDH’s independent reconstitution S-0056

None of this is stated in so many words: no act says grandfather. But it is no longer a match of names. Four separate acts put the 1751 couple’s parents, the father’s hand and the bride’s parish around the couple who baptized Pierre Pascal in 1758.

Proposed ruling (Claude, for Steve): one couple. On that ruling F-0003’s filiation of P-0003 rises from Probable-Strong to Proven, and the claims on P-0008 and P-0009 graded « as the identity link (Q-0005) » rise with it. No grade is changed until Steve rules.

Four La Prairie baptisms (S-0061 to S-0064, 29 Sept 2026)

Steve pulled the brothers’ baptisms at La Prairie, where PRDH puts the family in 1762–66: Joseph-Aimé (27 Nov 1762), Louis-Augustin (2 Jan 1764), Urbain (8 Mar 1765) and Jean-Baptiste (28 Apr 1766), each « fils de Pierre Comte et de Geneviève Bou[t]rise ». Joseph and Urbain are the two frères de l’époux of the 1787 wedding (S-0003). Two acts carry the father’s signature: « pierrecont » in 1764, run on exactly as in 1751, and « pierre cont[e] » in 1765. In 1765 the godmother is a Marie-Charlotte Comte. The sibship now runs, act by act, from Caughnawaga (1757, 1758, 1761) through Lachine (1759) to La Prairie (1762–66), with the same couple throughout.

Resolution

Resolved 29 Sept 2026 by Steve: one couple. Pierre Lecomte (Comte, Compte, Cont) and Geneviève Boutrice (Boullerice, Boulris, Boutrise), married at Lachine on 19 April 1751 (S-0004), are the parents of Pierre Pascal (S-0054, S-0003). The joins are the grandparents at the eldest child’s font (S-0058), the bride’s father naming a son (S-0057), the father’s signature « pierrecont » in 1751, 1761 and 1764 (S-0004, S-0057, S-0062), and a sibship continuous from 1757 to 1766 across four parishes. On this ruling F-0003’s filiation of P-0003 is raised from Probable-Strong to Proven, and the claims on P-0008 and P-0009 graded « as the identity link (Q-0005) » are raised with it.

The parish code table (p. 7) gives CONS = St-Constant, PHIL = St-Philippe, ISID = St-Isidore, JACQ = St-Jacques-le-Mineur.

What it says about each party

Groom: Louis Comte, son of Pascal Comte and Véronique Lériger. Bride: Rose David, daughter of François David and Catherine Aguenier. Married at St-Constant, 1 February 1830. No vf/ve marking on either entry — recorded as a first marriage for both.

Compiled, secondary: this is the trail to the act, not the act. Page 115 also carries, under COMTE: Pie. Pascal, Pierre & Geneviève Boullerie, PHIL 16-04-1787, LÉRIGER Véronique — the groom’s parents’ own marriage — and three further Comte entries (1824, 1827, 1828, all CONS) whose mother is given as Marguerite Sorel (two) or Véronique Laplante (one). Lériger and Laplante are the same dit-name family; Sorel is not. Whether one Pascal Comte married twice or two Pascals lived at St-Constant is the first question the ascent will have to answer.

Page 130, under DAVID, carries four children of François David & Catherine Aguenier marrying at CONS between 1823 and 1830 (Catherine 1823, Joseph 1828, Rose 1830, Marguerite 1830).

Names in this act without a person file

From the COMTE section: Pauline Comte (1824), M.-Olive Comte (1827), Véronique Comte (1828) and their spouses (names smeared on the scan); Marguerite Sorel, given as mother of the 1827–28 children — see Q-0002. From the DAVID section: Catherine David × J.-B. Ménard (1823), Joseph David × Françoise Ménard (1828), Marguerite David × Abraham Gagné (1830).

(Updated 2026-09-20, same day: mentions: filled once the person files existed — the record was written before them, and check E008 caught the gap.)

Read again for Q-0002 (29 Sept 2026)

The PDF’s page numbers are the printed page numbers. Page 115 re-rendered at 400 dpi and the COMTE block re-cropped; the spouses’ names that were « smeared » above are legible in their shape, and each is confirmed by the husband’s own entry elsewhere in the volume. The whole COMTE block, in the book’s order:

Louis Pascal & Véronique Lériger CONS 01-02-1830 DAVID, Rose
Véronique Pascal & Marguerite Sorel CONS 19-05-1828 GOURD, Louis
M.Olive Pascal & Marguerite Sorel CONS 24-09-1827 LECLERC, Georges
Pie.Pascal Pierre & Geneviève Boullerie PHIL 16-04-1787 LÉRIGER, Véronique
Pauline Pascal & Véronique Laplante CONS 25-10-1824 MAILLOUX, François

The husbands’ entries:

  • p. 224, GOURD: Louis — Pierre & Marguerite Binet — CONS 19-05-1828 — COMTE, Véronique.
  • p. 288, LECLERC: Georges — Eustache & Marie Cardinal — CONS 24-09-1827 — COMTE, M.Olive.
  • p. 333, MAILLOUX: François — Toussaint & Charlotte Betourné — CONS 25-10-1824 — COMTE, Pauline.

The 1830 act’s unresolved witness, « François Maill[e]rot(?), son beau-frère » (S-0002), fits François Mailloux, husband of Pauline Comte since 1824 — a lead for the reading, not a correction of the transcription; only the 1824 act can settle it.

Searched and not found. No Comte, Compte, Lecomte, Lecompte or Sompte groom in the volume marries a Sorel, and the SOREL – SAUREL – LANDRENAULT section (pp. 471–472) has no Comte spouse. So no Pascal Comte × Marguerite Sorel marriage took place in St-Philippe, St-Constant, St-Isidore or St-Jacques-le-Mineur (as far as this compiler indexed them). The same search in the Napierville, Lachine and Laprairie-cathedral répertoires on the NAS (text layer only, poor OCR) found nothing either — weaker evidence, and not recorded as a source.

Found and not used. p. 288, LECOMPTE: Amable Isab. — Pierre & Geneviève Bourrice — CONS 31-09-1793 — LEMIEUX, Pierre — a Comte daughter of Pierre & Geneviève Boullerice, so a sister of Pascal, marrying at St-Constant in 1793 (the date « 31-09 » is impossible as printed). The family was at St-Constant by then; the 1787 act had them at Pointe-Claire. Same page: Joseph — Pierre & Louise Chevalier — CONS 21-10-1793 — MONTOUR, Isabelle, a different Pierre Lecompte’s son.

J.-O. Chèvrefils ptre

Uncertain reading: the brother-in-law’s surname — Maillerot / Maillorot / Maillot; the letters after « Maill » are a flourish. Re-cropped at 3.5×; not resolvable beyond that on this frame.

What it says about each party

Groom — Louis Comte, journalier (day labourer), of this parish, fils majeur (of age, so born before 1 Feb 1809), son of Pascal Comte and Véronique Lériger de Laplante. Neither parent is styled feu; nothing is said either way about their being alive. Cannot sign.

Bride — Rose David, fille mineure (under 21, so born after 1 Feb 1809), daughter of François David, cultivateur, and Catherine Aguenier, of this parish. Her father is present. Cannot sign.

Witnesses, groom’s side — Pascal Comte, son frère (a second Pascal Comte in the same act: the father is named as a parent, the brother as a witness); François Maill[e]rot(?), son beau-frère — the husband of a Comte sister.

Witnesses, bride’s side — François David, her father; Jacques Aguenier and François Aguenier, both oncle maternel — brothers of Catherine Aguenier. Nobody signs.

The same page

The act immediately above is Abraham Gagné × Marguerite David, the same day: Abraham, cultivateur, fils majeur de René Gagné et de Félicité Dupuis; Marguerite, fille majeure de François David et de Catherine Aguenier, cultivateur, of this parish. Witnesses: René Gagné (father), Hubert Gagné (brother), Paul Aguenier; François David (father), François-Régis Bisson, and Jean-Baptiste Ménard, son beau-frère — matching the répertoire’s Catherine David × Ménard, 1823 (S-0001). Two David sisters married on one morning; Marguerite of age, Rose a minor.

Also on the page: burials of Antoine Lancto(t), 5 months (31 Jan), and Jacques Henkell(?), 6 years (31 Jan); marriage François Bisson × Flavie Monchamp (1 Feb); marriage François-Édouard Boucher × Marie Dubois (1 Feb). Not ours.

Uncertain readings: « St Ive » for the bride’s mother’s surname (St-Yves?). Both re-cropped at 3× on a 6240-px frame; the letters are clear, the words are not certain.

What it says about each party

Groom — Pierre Pascal Compte, son of Pierre Compte and Geneviève Boullerice, of the parish of Pointe-Claire. His father Pierre is present. Note the double given name: Pierre Pascal here, Pascal in 1830 (S-0002) and in the répertoire (S-0001).

Bride — Véronique Lérigé, daughter of Charles Lérigé de la Plante and Véronique St-Ive(?), of this parish (St-Philippe). Her forename was first written Monique and corrected to Véronique twice, in the margin and in the text — the correction is the priest’s own.

Witnesses — Pierre Compte, father of the groom; Joseph and Urbain Compte, brothers of the groom; Charles Lérigé, father of the bride — alive and present, which settles « du Sr » over « de feu » in the parentage clause; Charles Lérigé, brother of the bride. Some witnesses signed (the presbytère copy shows no signatures); the groom could not sign.

What it says about each party

Groom — Pierre Lecomte, son of Pierre Lecomte, bedeau (beadle) of the parish of Montréal, and of Marie Cha… Fo… — cut at the margin, but the witness clause names « Marie Fournier mère de l’époux », present and unable to sign. Bans were published in Montréal as well as Lachine, so the groom belonged to Montréal. He signs: « pierre cont ».

Bride — Geneviève Boutrice, daughter of Gabriel Boutrice and the late Geneviève [surname uncertain], of Lachine. She signs, as do her father and her brother Jean-Baptiste.

Witnesses — Gabriel Boutrice (father of the bride), Jean-Baptiste Boutrice (her brother), Pierre Deslandes (her uncle), Marie Fournier (mother of the groom); a Charles Conte signs but is not described — a brother of the groom is the obvious guess and is not a finding.

Spellings — the bride’s family is Boutrice here, Boullerice in 1787 (S-0003) and Boullerie in the répertoire (S-0001). The groom’s family is Lecomte here, Compte/Compt in 1787, Comte in 1830; he signs cont.

Re-read 29 September 2026 (Claude): the bride’s mother’s surname, « [Fotté? Setté?] » above, is « jetté ». Re-cropped at 3× with contrast raised: the first letter descends below the line, as this hand’s j does in « jeanbatiste » among the signatures. It was read this way only after LAFRANCE (S-0013) and PRDH (S-0056) gave Jetté. The frame fits that reading well, but the prompt came first. The bracket above is left as it was written.

What it says about each party

Groom — Pierre Le Comte, aged about 26 (if « vingt et six » is right → born c. 1695), son of a Le Comte whose forename I cannot read with confidence on this frame — it is a short word, consistent with an abbreviated Estienne — and of a Goupil whose forename follows a struck word and reads Anne. The parents are described as of the parish of the Saints-Anges (Lachine) — if that reading is right, the family had moved from Montréal (S-0006, 1701) to Lachine by 1721, and back to Montréal by 1751 (S-0004: the father is bedeau de la paroisse de Montréal).

Bride — Marie Charlotte Fournier, daughter of Antoine Fournier and Marie Magdeleine [surname uncertain].

Witnesses — one unnamed-on-this-frame witness who signed (the line straddles the page break); Guillaume Vinet(?), Jean Pilon, Pierre Ranger(?), habitants of Ste-Anne, who could not. Pilon and Ranger are Bout-de-l’Île families.

What this act does NOT give us: a certain day; a certain forename for the groom’s father; the bride’s mother’s surname. No larger frame exists (Steve, 20 Sept 2026); the remedies are the greffe copy of this register and the baptisms of the parties. ⚠ The identity of the groom’s father with the « Estienne(?) Comte, tailleur » of S-0006 rests on a shared surname, a shared wife’s surname (Goupil), and a forename I read as consistent — it is not yet a reading. The greffe copy of this register, or a higher-resolution frame, is the next step.

What it says about each party

The bride is the one who matters to us. Anne Goupil(le), aged 42 → born c. 1659, widow of Estienne(?) Comte, tailleur (tailor), daughter of the late Nicolas Goupil(le) and of Marie Pollier(?), of the parish of St-Michel de [—] — an origin in France, diocese unread. She seems to sign.

Her second husband — Simon Mongirot(?), aged about 25, son of the late Claude and of Catherine Moyneau, of Varennes(?) in the diocese of Langres (Champagne). Not on our ascent.

What it proves — that a Comte, tailor, forename read as Estienne, was dead before 6 Feb 1701 and had been married to Anne Goupil. It does not give their marriage date or place, nor name any child. The immigrant couple’s own marriage (Steve’s PRDH probe puts the line back to 1680) is not among the frames held.

As copied by Steve onto his ancestral chart from the LAFRANCE couples search: Gabriel Boullerice × Geneviève Jetté, married 1731-03-05 at Notre-Dame de Montréal. Resolves the surname I could not read on the 1751 act (S-0004): Jetté.

What it says about each party

A compiled index entry. It gives the marriage date and parish and names the parties (and, where noted above, their parents) in the index’s standardised spelling. It is one click from the Drouin image of the act, which has not been opened. Nothing here rises above Probable.

Chart annotation, 2026-09-21: the entry names Geneviève Jetté’s parents (linked as F-0029).

Chart annotation, 2026-09-21: the entry names Gabriel Boullerice’s parents (linked as F-0026).

As reported by Steve from the LAFRANCE entry: Louis Aguenier × Marie-Anne Bessette, married 15 September 1708 at St-Joseph de Chambly; the bride the daughter of Jean Bessette and Anne Seigneur. Louis’s parents as given by the entry are not yet recorded here.

What it says about each party

A compiled index entry, one click from the act. It does not name the couple’s children; the filiation of François Aguenier (P-0027) to this couple rests on the index entry of his marriage (× Marguerite Gibault), whose acte number is pending.

⚠ PK-0003. Jean Bessette and Anne Seigneur are the founding couple of Steve’s other project (ondits.com; Evidence Register 03). This is the second point at which the from-scratch ascent meets his own tree, and a far deeper one than the first.

Chart annotation, 2026-09-21: the entry names Louis Aguenier’s parents (linked as F-0034).

What it says about each party

A compiled index entry for a burial. It fixes the forename — Aimé, not the Estienne(?) read off the 1701 frame — and a death before the widow’s 1701 remarriage, consistent with S-0006. Probable until the act is opened.

The entries that match a woman held in this project, copied as printed:

Ducharme, Catherine, m. Roy, Pierre, dit St-Lambert, Jan. 12, 1672
Seigneur, Anne, m. Besset, Jean, dit Brisetout, contract Jul. 3, 1668
Denot, Jeanne, m. 1. Robidou, André, Jun. 7, 1667, m. 2. Surprenant, Jacques, dit Sanssoucy, Aug. 16, 1678
Petit, Jeanne, m. Séguin, François, dit Ladéroute, Oct. 31, 1672
Raisin, Marguerite, m. Deniger, Bernard, dit Sanssoucy, 1670 or 1671
Faucon, Marie, m. 1. Chartier, Guillaume, Nov. 27, 1663, m. 2. Jocteau, …
Debure, Marie, m. 1: Énard, Gilles, Oct. 6, 1665, m. 2: Bernard, Jean, dit Anse, Dec. 27, 1666

Surname-only coincidences were read and ruled irrelevant: Delestre Anne, Paviot Marie, Boyer Barbe, Seigneur Marie (m. Sasseville), and the Roy / Martin / Morin / Chevalier / Vallée / Rousseau / Petit / Chartier / Berger / Bernard entries whose forenames or husbands do not match anyone held. The SFRSC list has no entry for Catherine Charles, Françoise Morin, Suzanne Rocheteau, Marie Frit, Catherine Forestier or Jeanne Merrin — consistent with those six being earlier arrivals (S-0046).

What it says about each party

A society’s compiled roster: authored, secondary, no citations of its own. It says nothing about parents or origins; it says a woman of this name married this man on this date and is counted a fille du roi. Every held husband agrees (the roster’s husbands are in mentions: where a family cites it for its date — Besset, Deniger). Four held marriage dates agree exactly (Roy 1672-01-12 = F-0016; Séguin 1672-10-31 = F-0028; Chartier 1663-11-27 = F-0039; Bernard 1666-12-27 = F-0042); three couples have no held date (F-0023 Bessette, F-0050 Robidou, F-0058 Deniger), and the roster’s date becomes the lead for finding their act. The designation is Probable and can go no higher on this source.

Method note. Matched 21 Sept 2026 by an accent-folded surname search of the 69 women then held against the 843 entries, followed by a read of every hit. The PDF is filed with the act images (internal, not committed) because it is the society’s document, not ours.

The page reproduces Gagné’s list as bare names (surname, forename). Gagné’s criteria, as the page states them: arrived before September 1663; aged 12–45; married, signed a marriage contract, or signed an enlistment contract in New France; not accompanied by both parents; not accompanied by or joining a husband.

Entries that match a woman held here, copied as printed:

Charles, Catherine
Morin, Françoise
Rocheteau, Suzanne
Frit, Marie
Forestier, Catherine
Merrin/Mairé, Jeanne
Chefdeville, Marie

⚠ Chefdeville, Marie was missed by the first (exact-surname) pass and found the same evening through Gagné (S-0048): the project spells her Chedeville (P-0072, S-0026). Logged as a method failure in the journal.

Surname-only coincidences read and ruled irrelevant: Boyer Anne and Marie (ours is Jeanne), Lelièvre Françoise (ours is Anne), Martin Anne (ours is Élisabeth), Chevalier/Lechevalier Anne (ours is Marie), Morin Claire, Gaulin Marguerite (ours is Suzanne). No Seigneur on this list — Anne Seigneur is on the SFRSC roster instead (S-0045).

What it says about each party

A name is not a woman. This list names no husband, so it cannot on its own say that our Catherine Charles is Gagné’s. What lifts a match is the list’s own criterion: a held marriage in New France before September 1663. Three qualify — Catherine Charles × Urbain Jetté, Notre-Dame de Montréal 1659-10-26 (F-0030); Françoise Morin × Étienne Dumais, Notre-Dame de Québec 1648-01-28 (F-0037); Suzanne Rocheteau × Jean Boutin, Château-Richer 1661-09-22 (F-0041) — and are graded Probable. Three are named only as parents in a child’s index entry with no held marriage (F-0059 Aguenier × Frit, F-0062 Ménard × Forestier, F-0067 Perrin × Merrin) and stay Possible until their own marriage is found and dated. Gagné’s book, not this page, is the place to confirm any of the six — and did, the same evening (S-0048).

Method note. Fetched and matched 21 Sept 2026 by the same accent-folded surname search as S-0045; every hit read.

A biographical dictionary — Gagné’s back cover: “nearly 800 women and girls sent from France to populate Québec between 1663 and 1673”, with an index of husbands. Each entry gives the woman’s birth and parents in France, her arrival, each marriage with its contract and notary and who could sign, the husband’s origin, the children with baptism dates, and the deaths. Seven entries cover women held here; the substance of each is on the person record under From Gagné, and the photographs (IMG_6362–6375) are in Steve’s files, not in this repository.

The seven, with what the entry says of the marriage this project holds:

Entry Marriage Held as
Ducharme, Catherine 12 Jan 1672 Montréal, Pierre Roy dit Saint-Lambert; contract 27 Dec 1671, Basset; neither signed F-0016 (1672-01-12 ✓)
Debure, Marie (2) 27 Dec 1666 Québec, Jean Bernard dit Anse; contract 3 Dec 1666, Duquet; neither signed F-0042 (1666-12-27 ✓)
Denot, Jeanne (1) 7 Jun 1667 Québec, André Robidou dit Lespagnol; contract 16 May, Duquet; neither signed F-0050 (no date held)
Faucon, Marie 27 Nov 1663 Montréal, Guillaume Chartier dit Robert; contract 18 Nov, Basset; neither signed F-0039 (1663-11-27 ✓)
Seigneur, Anne contract 3 Jul 1668 Chambly, Adhémar, Jean Besset dit Brisetout; neither signed; no church date given F-0023 (no date held)
Petit, Jeanne 31 Oct 1672 Boucherville, François Séguin dit Ladéroute; contract 21 Sep, Frérot; both signed F-0028 (1672-10-31 ✓)
Raisin, Marguerite “some time in 1670 or 1671” Chambly, Bernard Deniger dit Sanssoucy F-0058 (no date held)

Every held child appears in Gagné’s list of the couple’s children: André Roy bp 14 Dec 1692 Laprairie; Angélique Bernard bp 30 Aug 1672; Joseph Robidou bp 15 Jan 1678 Laprairie; Marie Chartier bp 23 Feb 1676 Pointe-aux-Trembles; Marie-Anne Bessette b. c. 1679; Jeanne Séguin bp 11 Aug 1680 Boucherville; Marie Deniger b. c. 1675.

What it says about each party

Authored and secondary: Gagné synthesises PRDH, Jetté, Tanguay, the notarial indexes and the society lists, and cites little inline. What it adds over the SFRSC roster (S-0045) is the content: origins, contracts, signatures, children. It confirms the designation for all seven (Probable — the cap for a compiled work), and it confirms the identity of each held couple by naming the same husband and, where the project holds one, the same date. Three marriages held with no date now have one from Gagné, graded Probable, with the act still to find. Each child’s baptism date is a lead to the act that would turn a name-match filiation into a Proven one.

Where Gagné’s prose slips — “Pierre and Marie settled at Laprairie” under Ducharme; “Suzanne came to Canada” under Debure — the slip is noted on the record and not carried.

The companion volume to S-0047 for the 262 women who came before the King’s programme, on the same plan: origins, arrival, each marriage and its contract, the husband, the children, the deaths. Seven entries cover women held here; their substance is on the person records under From Gagné; the photographs (IMG_6376–6390) are in Steve’s files, not in this repository.

Entry Marriage Held as
Charles, Catherine 26 Oct 1659 Montréal, Urbain Jetté; contract 3 Oct, Basset; neither signed F-0030 (1659-10-26 ✓)
Morin, Françoise (2) 28 Jan 1648 Québec, Étienne Demers or Dumets; contract 1 Jan, Lecoustre; he could not sign F-0037 (1648-01-28 ✓)
Rocheteau, Suzanne 22 Sep 1661 Château-Richer, Jean Boutin dit Larose; no contract found; he could not sign F-0041 (1661-09-22 ✓)
Frit, Marie (1) 7 Oct 1658 Montréal, Léger Haguenier dit Lafontaine; contract 22 Sep, Basset; she signed F-0059 (no date held)
Forestier, Catherine 19 Nov 1657 Trois-Rivières, Jacques Ménard dit Lafontaine; no contract found; neither signed F-0062 (no date held)
Merrin or Mairé, Jeanne (2) 18 Jul 1661 Montréal, Henri Perrin; contract 17 Jul, Basset; both signed F-0067 (no date held)
Chefdeville, Marie 7 Jan 1654 Montréal, André Demers or Dumets; contract 11 Dec 1653, Lambert Closse; both signed F-0049 (no date held)

Held children in Gagné’s lists: Urbain Jetté bp 11 Apr 1666 Montréal; Étienne Demers — the second of that name, bp 3 Dec 1656 Sillery (the first, bp 1653, died before 1666); Jacques Boutin b. Petit Cap, bp 10 Jun 1669 Château-Richer; Paul Haguenier bp 24 Sep 1661 Montréal (the couple’s only child); Michelle Perrin bp 24 Aug 1661 Montréal. Under Forestier the children include a Jeanne-Françoise bp 24 May 1669 Trois-Rivières — probably our Marie-Jeanne Ménard (P-0109), but Gagné does not say so.

The seventh, Chefdeville, was first found in a parenthesis of the Charles entry (“André Demers (husband of fille à marier Marie Chefdeville)”, guardian of the Jetté children 6 Jul 1688) and her own entry was photographed the same evening. It lists twelve children with two daughters Marie — one bp 28 Oct 1655 Montréal, one born c. 1669 — and does not say which married Jean Bourrice in 1686 (our P-0068).

What it says about each party

As S-0047: authored, secondary, Probable at best, and the confirmation this project needed for the six bare names on the TFCG list (S-0046) — each entry names the husband the project holds. Four marriages held without a date now have one.

… Consigny ptre

Uncertain readings: the word after « Saurel » is written journalier. It is probably the priest repeating the groom’s occupation by mistake, and is not read as the bride’s occupation. The priest’s initials before « Consigny » are a flourish.

What it says about each party

Groom: Paschal Lecompte, mineur (under 21, so born after 13 Nov 1788), journalier, of this parish, son of Paschal Lecompte and Véronique Laplante, « ses père et mère de cette paroisse ». Neither parent is styled feu. His parents consent. Cannot sign.

Bride: Marguerite Saurel (Sorel), of this parish, daughter of feu Michel Saurel and of Marie-Anne Provost. Her mother has remarried: François-Ignace Dupuis is present as the bride’s beau-père, which here means stepfather. Cannot sign.

Witnesses: Jean-Baptiste Laplante, oncle maternel de l’époux (a brother of Véronique Lériger de Laplante); Joseph Gagné, friend of the groom; François-Ignace Dupuis, stepfather of the bride; François Saurel, brother of the bride. Nobody signs.

What this does to Q-0002. This is the « Pascal & Marguerite Sorel » of the répertoire (S-0001, p. 115), and he is not Louis’s father. He is Louis’s brother, the son of Pascal Comte and Véronique Laplante, married in 1809 while still a minor. The 1830 witness « Pascal Comte, son frère » (S-0002, P-0007) is very probably this man. M.-Olive (m. 1827) and Véronique (m. 1828) Comte would then be Louis’s nieces, born after this marriage, around 1810, and aged about 17–18 at marriage. The younger one carries her grandmother’s name.

Names in this act without a person file

Marguerite Saurel (bride) · Michel Saurel, feu (her father) · Marie-Anne Provost (her mother) · François-Ignace Dupuis (her stepfather) · François Saurel (her brother) · Jean-Baptiste Laplante (the groom’s maternal uncle) · Joseph Gagné (friend of the groom) · … Consigny, ptre.

Not given files yet, deliberately. A family for Pascal Comte fils × Marguerite Saurel is needed only when the 1827–28 brides are attached to it, and that waits for their acts. Also, site.json’s counts.families and counts.women count every family and woman, not only those on the ascent. Adding this couple now would make the founding-mothers page read « fourteen of the seventy women in this pedigree », which is false.

Found and not used

The rest of the opening, 10–15 Nov 1809, St-Constant: four burials and three baptisms on the two pages, none with a Comte, Lecompte, Laplante or Saurel in the marginal headwords. Their names were read only at overview magnification and are not transcribed here (rule 6).

Marginal heading: B. Paschal / Comte

J.-O. Chèvrefils ptre

Uncertain reading: the godfather’s surname, Hugron. The first letter is a looped capital that could be an H or a St ligature.

What it says about each party

Child: Paschal, born and baptized 14 March 1821.

Father: Paschal Comte, journallier, of this parish, present, cannot sign. This is the occupation and the wife of P-0007 in 1809 (S-0049), twelve years on. It is the first document held that gives this couple a child. The répertoire’s two Comte brides of 1827–28 are not this child, but it shows the household active at St-Constant between them and the 1809 marriage.

Mother: Marguerite Saurel. Not styled feue.

Godparents: François Hugron(?) and Josette Lefebvre. Neither can sign.

Rose David’s mother was a Catherine Aguenier (P-0006) whose brothers witnessed the 1830 act. A Marguerite Aguenier married at St-Constant is probably a sister or a cousin. Not pursued; recorded for the David–Aguenier line.

Same page, 17 Mar 1821: burial of Archange Dupuy, 20, wife of François Barbeau, cultivateur; present François Barbeau son beau-père and René Barbeau, her uncle(?), and a Jean Baptiste Laplante. That may be the man who witnessed the 1809 act as the groom’s maternal uncle (S-0049), still at St-Constant.

[signed] louis boula[n]d[i]er(?) · marianne la[v]… · … ptre

Uncertain readings: the mother’s and godfather’s surname is written Boulayer / Boulanger in the text and signed in a hand that reads boulaudier / boulandier. The marraine’s surname is Lavernier / Laverrière. The officiant’s signature is not read.

What it says about each party

Child: Louis Pascal Comte, born and baptized 4 April 1795 at Notre-Dame de Montréal.

Father: Joseph Comte. Mother: Marie Boulanger(?).

This is not our Louis. The groom of 1830 (P-0001) is the son of Pascal Comte and Véronique Lériger de Laplante (S-0002). This child is the son of Joseph Comte. A Joseph Compte, brother of the groom, witnessed Pascal’s own marriage in 1787 (S-0003). Unless a document joins the two Josephs, this is a different family, and very possibly Louis’s first cousin, given the same two forenames. His birth in 1795 would make him majeur in 1830 too, so the age clause in S-0002 cannot tell them apart. What separates them is the parents’ names, and nothing else.

Recorded as a same-name hazard, the reason this file exists. Any index hit for a « Louis Comte » born in the 1790s must be checked for the father’s forename before it is attached to P-0001.

[signed] pascal comte · … Consigny ptre

What it says about each party

Child: Louis, born and baptized 22 August 1807 at St-Constant. That makes him 22 on 1 Feb 1830, so fils majeur, as S-0002 says.

Father: Paschal Lecompte, forgeron (blacksmith), of this parish, present, and he signs: « pascal comte ». This conflicts with the 1787 act (S-0003), where the groom Pierre Pascal Compte « ne sçait signer ». See Q-0004.

Mother: Véronique Laplante. Not feue.

Godparents: Louis Lériger, whose surname is the mother’s own, so probably her kin; and Julie Pinsonneault. Neither can sign.

Is this the 1830 groom? The 1830 act (S-0002) names Louis’s parents as Pascal Comte and Véronique Lériger de Laplante, of St-Constant. This child has the same forename, the same father’s forename and surname, the same mother, and the same parish, and his birth date fits the age clause. The only other Louis Comte held, the 1795 Montréal baptism (S-0051), has a different father, Joseph. A second Louis of this couple, born before 1809 after this one had died, is the one reading left. Nothing suggests it, and a burial of the 1807 Louis would be needed to raise it.

A Laplante household at St-Constant alongside Véronique’s. With the godfather Louis Lériger above and the 1809 witness Jean-Baptiste Laplante, oncle maternel (S-0049), this makes at least two Laplante men of her generation in the parish. Not pursued. Marginal heading: S. 10 / Paschal / Lecomte.

… Bédard ptre

Uncertain readings: the two words struck after « Louis Lecomte » are not read. The curé’s initial is a flourish. « trente un » is written « huit trente un », with cent omitted.

What it says about each party

Deceased: Paschal Lecomte, died 13 March 1831 (avant-hier), buried 15 March, aged 73. That puts his birth around 1757–58. Burial ages are the informant’s estimate and are often out by a few years. He is époux, not veuf, of Véronique Laplante, so she was alive. He is « de cette paroisse »: St-Rémi, not St-Constant. The phrase could grammatically qualify either spouse.

Wife: Véronique Laplante, alive on 15 March 1831.

Witnesses: Joseph Bédard; Louis Lecomte. Nobody signs. Probably Louis himself (P-0001), who married at St-Constant thirteen months earlier and could not sign then either. Not attached: the act gives him no relationship, and rule 1 wants a qualifier, not a name.

What this does to Q-0004. Born c. 1757–58, he is the right age for the 1787 groom. Pierre Pascal’s parents married at Lachine in April 1751 (S-0004), so a son born in 1757–58 would have been about 29 at his 1787 wedding. The burial names the wife of the St-Constant father (S-0052, S-0049, S-0002), with no Pierre and no parents. So the age is consistent with one man, and it rules out one alternative: a St-Constant Pascal much younger than the 1787 groom. It does not by itself join the two.

Names in this act without a person file

Joseph Bédard (witness) · Louis Lecomte (witness; probably P-0001, not attached) · … Bédard, curé.

The rest of the opening, 1–19 Mar 1831, St-Rémi: six baptisms and one other burial. None has a Comte, Lecomte or Laplante in its marginal headword. But the baptism of 4 Mar 1831 (B. 30) has a Jean-Baptiste Laplante as godfather (re-cropped at magnification): a third sighting of that name, after St-Constant 1809 (S-0049) and 1821 (S-0050). Its other names were read only at overview magnification and are not transcribed (rule 6).

Die 26 Martii Ego infra scriptus baptizavi cum Ecclesiae caeremoniis puerum pridie natum ex patre D.(?) Petro Lecomte, et matre Genovefa Boulris conjugibus, quem Petrum Paschalem nominaverunt Joannes Baptista […] et Maria Joseph de Ganne(?)

Jos. Huguet

On 26 March, I the undersigned baptized with the ceremonies of the Church a boy born the day before, of the father Pierre Lecomte and the mother Geneviève Boulris, married, whom Jean-Baptiste […] and Marie-Josèphe de Ganne(?) named Pierre Pascal.

The year. No year is written in the act. It is read from the page: a year-end tally, « total 56 », then an interpolated note dated « die 2° jan. 1758 » (the last digit overwritten, and repeated above the line), then this year’s entries from January on. It is confirmed independently: Easter Sunday 1758 fell on 26 March (computed, Gregorian). The child was born on Holy Saturday, baptized on Easter Day, and named Paschal. No other year from 1750 to 1764 puts Easter on 26 March.

Uncertain readings: a letter struck or abbreviated before « Petro », possibly D[omino]. The godfather’s surname, smudged beyond reading at the end of the line. It seems to carry over to the start of the next, which reads « …[?]trice », the first letters lost at the margin. Boutrice, the 1751 bride’s brother Jean-Baptiste (S-0004), would fit, but it is not read and is not relied on. (Re-examined 29 Sept 2026 at 3× with contrast raised.) The godmother’s surname de Ganne / de Garne. The mother’s Boulris is this priest’s spelling of the name written Boullerice in 1787 (S-0003) and Boutrice elsewhere (F-0003).

What it says about each party

Child: Petrus Paschalis, Pierre Pascal, born 25 March 1758, baptized 26 March at the Sault-St-Louis mission.

Father: Pierre Lecomte. Mother: Geneviève Boulris (Boullerice). Married (conjugibus). These are the parents the 1787 act gives its groom Pierre Pascal Compte (S-0003), and the couple married at Lachine in April 1751 (S-0004, F-0003).

Against the burial (S-0053). Born 25 March 1758, he was 72 years and 11 months on 13 March 1831. The St-Rémi curé wrote « soixante et treize ans ». That is as close as a burial age gets.

LAFRANCE (Généalogie Québec, Institut Drouin), marriage search by the bride's name: Geneviève Boutrice / Boullerice / Boulris / Boullerie, all dates and parishes. Searched by Steve 2026-09-29; one result, the 1751 Lachine marriage Lecomte × Boutrice (held as S-0004)

No screenshot. As reported by Steve on 29 Sept 2026: searches of the LAFRANCE marriage index for a bride named Geneviève under each of the four spellings this project has seen, Boutrice, Boullerice, Boulris, Boullerie, any date and any parish, return one marriage only: Pierre Lecomte × Geneviève Boutrice, Lachine, 19 April 1751, the act held and sighted as S-0004.

What it says

A negative result from a compiled index. It says that the index knows one marriage of a Geneviève of this surname, not that only one took place. Its limits:

  • Coverage. LAFRANCE indexes Catholic marriages in Québec. A marriage outside it (the Pays d’en Haut, Detroit, a Protestant rite) would not appear.
  • Spelling. Only the four spellings above were searched. A fifth spelling, or a compound forename (Marie-Geneviève), could hide a second entry.
  • Compiled, so Probable at most (METHOD §2), for anything resting on it alone.

What it rules out, within those limits, is a second Pierre-and-Geneviève couple of this surname marrying in the colony. For Q-0005 that is the alternative that mattered: the 1758 and 1787 parents, Pierre Lecomte/Compte & Geneviève Boulris/Boullerice, have no other marriage in the index to belong to.

(PRDH’s « Birth (Baptism) » column gives the birth date where known. Pierre Pascal’s 1758-03-25 is the birth, and his baptism was the 26th, S-0054.)

What it says

A compiled family reconstitution: demographers’ linking of parish acts into families. Under METHOD §2 it leads to the acts and is never the act. Anything resting on it alone is Probable at most.

What it contributes to Q-0005 is independence. PRDH links the 1751 Lachine couple to Pierre Pascal’s 1758 baptism, his 1787 marriage and his 1831 burial, with the dates we read from the acts ourselves. That was done by other hands, on the whole family, and not from the three acts we chose. Our reading and theirs agree.

It also gives, for the first time, the whole sibship. The family moves Caughnawaga (1757–61) → La Prairie (1762–66) → Pointe-Claire (1767–79). That matches the 1787 act’s « de la paroisse de la Pointe Claire » and the sister’s 1793 St-Constant marriage (répertoire, S-0001). The répertoire printed that date « 31-09-1793 ». PRDH gives 30 Sept 1793.

Points to check against the acts, not adopt:

  • The father is Pierre Marie here. Every act held calls him Pierre.
  • The 1761 son is named Gabriel, the bride’s father’s name. That suggests Gabriel Boutrice was godfather, which is what Q-0005 asks for, but the baptism is not held.
  • The bride’s mother is Jetté (Beaurivage). S-0004’s « Fotté? Setté? » is now read as jetté (below).

B. Well S.J.

[signed] pierre cont · Thereze savoyard

On 12 September I baptized with the ceremonies of the Church a boy born the day before, of the father Pierre Cont and Geneviève Boutrise, married, whom Gabriel Boutrise named Gabriel, with Thérèse Savoyard, who signed with the child’s father.

The year is not written in the act or on the opening. It is 1761 by PRDH (S-0056), which gives this child’s birth as 11 Sept 1761, the day before this baptism (« pridie natum »). PRDH indexed this act. It falls six frames after Pierre Pascal’s baptism of March 1758 (S-0054), in the same volume.

Uncertain readings: the godfather’s surname is written like the mother’s: Bou, then a letter that is t or r with a looped ascender, then ise. The priest spells both the same way, so they are one name, Boutrise. It is not Bourise: the mother’s own surname two lines below has the same letter, and she is Boutrice in 1751.

What it says about each party

Child: Gabriel, born 11 Sept, baptized 12 Sept [1761].

Father: Petrus Cont. He signs, « pierre cont », all lower case, the forename run on into the surname, and spelled cont, the spelling the 1751 Lachine groom used for his own signature (S-0004, « pierrecont »). No priest in either act spells the name that way. The 1751 frame is low-resolution (2578 px wide), so the two hands are consistent rather than matched letter by letter.

Mother: Genovefa Boutrise: Geneviève Boutrice, the 1751 bride’s surname in this priest’s spelling.

Godfather: Gabriel Boutrise. The act gives no relationship, but he has the forename and surname of the 1751 bride’s father, Gabriel Boutrice, who was present and signed at her wedding (S-0004, P-0021). The child is named for him, and in this register the godparents name the child. The simplest reading is that the godfather is the child’s maternal grandfather.

Godmother: Thérèse Savoyard, who signs.

For Q-0005. This baptism joins the Caughnawaga couple to the 1751 Lachine couple twice, and neither join is a name match of the couple:

  1. By kin. The Caughnawaga couple’s son is named by a Gabriel Boutrice, whose name is the 1751 bride’s father’s name.
  2. By hand. The Caughnawaga father signs pierre cont, as the 1751 groom did.

The Caughnawaga couple of 1761 is the couple of Pierre Pascal’s baptism in 1758: the same mission, the same names, three and a half years apart, and PRDH (S-0056) holds them as one family.

B. Deneuville S.J.

On 10 February I baptized a girl born that day, of the father Pierre Lecompte and the mother Geneviève Boutrise, married, whom Gabriel Boutrise and Marie-Charlotte Fournier named Marie-Geneviève.

What it says about each party

Child: Marie-Geneviève, born and baptized 10 Feb 1757. By PRDH (S-0056) she is the eldest child of the family.

Parents: Pierre Lecompte and Geneviève Boutrise, married.

Godparents: Gabriel Boutrise and Marie-Charlotte Fournier. The act gives neither a relationship. But the 1751 Lachine act (S-0004) names the bride’s father Gabriel Boutrice (present, signed) and the groom’s mother Marie Fournier, Marie Cha[rlotte] Fo[urnier] in the parentage clause (present, could not sign), and the 1721 act (S-0005) names her Marie Charlotte Fournier. The eldest child of a couple named by one grandparent from each side is the ordinary custom of the colony.

For Q-0005. This is the strongest single act for the question. Six years after the Lachine wedding, the Caughnawaga couple’s eldest child is named by two people who carry the names of the 1751 bride’s father and the 1751 groom’s mother. That joins the couple to both families of the 1751 act.

Year: 1759, from the page. The December entries that follow run to « fin de l’année », then the heading « 1760 », and the next act is dated « l’an mil sept cent soixante et le premier janvier ». PRDH (S-0056) gives 1759-11-08 for this child.

Not read at this resolution: the mother’s surname, the day of birth (PRDH’s 8th would fit « huit », which is not certain), whether the godfather is described (father? grandfather?), and the godmother’s surname after « lac ».

What it says about each party

Child: Marie-Geneviève, baptized 10 Nov 1759 at Lachine. She has the same name as the 1757 child (S-0058), whom PRDH gives no burial for. A second child of the name usually means the first had died.

Parents: Pierre Lecomte and Geneviève […].

Godparents: Pierre Lecomte, possibly the father standing in or the grandfather, the Montréal beadle of 1751; not stated. Françoise Lac[…].

For Q-0005. Weaker than S-0057 and S-0058, because of the resolution. What it adds is place: between the Caughnawaga baptisms of 1758 and 1761, the couple baptized a child at Lachine, the 1751 bride’s own parish and the parish of her wedding.

What it says about each party

Deceased: Geneviève Boulerith (Boullerice), died 6 Dec 1799, buried 8 Dec, at Montréal, aged 72. She is the widow (veuve) of Pierre Comte, forgeron.

Her husband: Pierre Comte, blacksmith, dead by December 1799. That is the trade his son Pascal practised at St-Constant in 1807 (S-0052).

Witnesses: the church’s two cantors, as usual at Notre-Dame; no kin.

The age does not fit exactly. The bride’s parents married on 5 March 1731 (F-0006; index, S-0013). A daughter of that marriage was at most about 68 in December 1799, not 72. A burial age four years too high for an old woman is common, since the informant is guessing, and this one was given by nobody named. Recorded as a discrepancy, not a conflict. The 1731 act is not held.

For Q-0005. It adds no kin, but it pairs Geneviève Boullerice with Pierre Comte once more, independently of the St-Philippe and Caughnawaga acts. And forgeron runs from the father (this act) to the son (S-0052), which ties the St-Constant blacksmith Pascal back to a Pierre Comte blacksmith of Montréal.

Parents: Pierre Comte and Geneviève Bouthise (Boutrice), « son épouse ».

Godparents: Louis Montreuil, who does not sign, and Marie-Marguerite Paquet, who signs.

The father signs « pierrecont », forename and surname run together, exactly as the 1751 Lachine groom signed (S-0004, « pierrecont »), and spelled cont as at Caughnawaga in 1761 (S-0057). Date. « Le cinquième jour du mois de mars de l’année mil sept cent trente et un ». The next entry on the following frame is dated « Le mardi sixième mars mil sept cent trente un ».

What it says about each party

Groom: Gabriel Bou[rt…], the surname running off the line end, son of the late Jean-Baptiste […]. He signs: « gabri[el] bou[…]ri[…] », lower case, with a looped g. That is consistent with the « gabriel bo[utrice] » who signed as father of the bride at Lachine in 1751 (S-0004). Both frames are coarse, so consistent, not matched.

Bride: Geneviève […] Jetté, daughter of Urbain Jetté, who is present, and of […]. A mari[e] joseph jette and a marguerite jette sign, probably her kin, though no relationship is legible.

Witnesses: Jean-Baptiste Bou[r]trice(?), probably of the groom’s family; Charles Le Verrier(?); Urbain Jetté, father of the bride; Nicolas Jetté, uncle; Luc Dufresne.

Against what was held. The index (S-0013) gave this marriage as Gabriel Boullerice × Geneviève Jetté, 5 March 1731, Notre-Dame, and linked the groom’s parents as Jean Bourrice × Marie Demers (F-0026) and the bride’s as Urbain Jetté × Marie Chevalier (F-0029). The act agrees on the date, the place, both forenames, the bride’s surname, both fathers’ forenames and the bride’s father’s surname. It could not be read for the groom’s full surname, the groom’s father’s surname or either mother.

Found and not used

Same first frame, left-hand page, February 1731: the burial of an infant ondoyé, « le fils de pierre comte » (marginal heading). A Pierre Comte was having children at Montréal in 1731, and the beadle Pierre Le Comte (P-0010) married Marie-Charlotte Fournier in 1721. The mother’s name was not read at this resolution, so nothing is claimed.
