Fils majeur — "son of age" — is the first thing the 1830 marriage act at St-Constant says about Louis Comte: journalier de cette paroisse, fils majeur de Pascal Comte. It is also what this project is trying to be: a genealogy that stands on its own documents.

It is written by Steve Rock, who has researched his own Franco-Canadian families for more than twenty years (ondits.com), and by Claude, an AI. The division of labour is plain: Steve holds the subscriptions, pulls the documents, makes every ruling on an open question, and approves every journal entry. Claude reads the act images, transcribes them, writes the records, runs the checks, and drafts the journal — every entry here was drafted by Claude and approved by Steve, in the first person plural. A project about method should say how it was made.

What it costs

Subscriptions are highly preferable and this project uses them: PRDH (the indexed Catholic acts of Québec to 1849/1861) and Généalogie Québec, the Drouin Institute's own site, which holds the Fonds Drouin act images and leads into PRDH. FamilySearch and BAnQ are free. Every source record says which repository it came from, so the journal can say honestly what a subscription bought.

What is not here

The act images. They are licensed content and are never published; what you will find instead is a full transcription of every act we have read, with the doubtful words marked as doubtful.
